Basically, many people said that they gained weight while taking Clomid and experienced severe mood swings. There were some pretty horrible stories about mood changes, headaches and weight gain so I got really scared. I don’t want to gain weight, that’s the last thing I need. And mood swings - I get those on my own anyway, no need for any chemical help with those Urgh, all this stuff is making me really worried about starting Clomid. But I just have to do it, at least for one month and see how I feel. I had really bad side effects from birth control pills when I was taking them a few years ago - severe nausea being one of them, and I’m really worried about side effects of hormones. I wonder if some people don’t have any side effects from Clomid?

The Ivy System and the sacred White Coat Ceremony…

Today was a big day. Today we received our white coats. They are still bleached white with nary a stain. In many cases, they are comically oversized in body and undersized in sleeve. They feel strange to wear. Would I venture down a crowded hospital hallway wearing this coat? Heck no! Someone might mistake me for someone that knows something. Would I wear it on an airplane? Um, no. I’d be “pitting out” (just learned that term from a fellow med student - it means sweating through your shirt pits) the entire flight fearful of that terrifying announcement: “We have a medical emergency. Is there a doctor on board?”

But I’m getting ahead of myself. In the afternoon, shortly after a “meet the deans” luncheon with students and parents, we gathered in a lecture hall to learn about the “Ivy System”. Can you believe that Ivy School of Medicine has no grades? Most other med students don’t. Yeah, a lot of places are pass/fail. That essentially means you get a grade and then it’s mapped to a different type of grade, a P (e.g. an A, B or C) or an F (e.g. a D or F). But here there really, truly are no grades.
Instead, everyone is assigned a super-duper-secret code number that they are not allowed to share with anyone. The only other person that knows your super-duper-secret code number is the registrar, who you can go to if you forget it, somehow. When you take a qualifying test online (only happens a couple times a year), you use your super-duper-secret code number. If you happen to fail that test, as I understand a rare occurrence, then you do have a responsibility to come forward and ask the professor for help. But it’s your responsibility. They only “break the code” if a student fails one of the rare qualifying exams and does not come forward.

This is a lesson in what not to do if you work in NYC and are the President/Head coach/GM of a sports team. Especially if you happen to work right in the middle of Manhattan. There is no escape now. Isiah Thomas has signed his own death certificate.

Isiah Thomas cautioned reporters yesterday not to turn the Knicks’ season into a battle of wills between the embattled head coach and the team’s disgruntled fan base. But it may be too late.
Yesterday, an NPR news story on Morning Edition juxtaposed two post-election comments — one from George W. Bush and one from Bill Clinton, both of whom had just woken up to a party-switch in Congress — in order to compare how they both reacted to the changes in government:

Back on Track
So I took my tired butt home and took a nap after work. I woke up sweating and feeling kind of discombulated, and hungry. I ate a few of those fake crab meat things, and went to the grocery store, because a lot of the produce I hate bought went bad over the weekend, and I had ran out of eggs and cheese. This dieting is expensive. I left the store $71 lighter! Granted, some stuff like the Laughing Cow is $2.99, but they had the light kind in, so I grabbed two ( I didn’t notice the book saying to eat the light kind, but on a list I belong too, people were talking about it, it couldn’t hurt)..two things of hummus.

I was also too lazy to cook, so I bought some roasted asparagus, and lime cilanto steak whcih i picked the potatoes of off, and had a small salad. When I was not dieting, i was eating so much pasta and ramen noodles, so that stuff is cheap. When I was a kid, I was always confused when I saw poor fat people, now that I am a broke adult, I totally understand. Cheap food is fattening.

Maybe I’m being picky, but I’m seeing a different attitude towards losing control of Congress from each president. Clinton is a bit more humbled and seems to smell the coffee, while Bush doesn’t seem as sincere. But maybe that’s because in 24 hours, he went from sounding like a cocky Texan to a. . . well, a more normal person.
The fans already have started chanting “Fire Thomas,” and Thomas didn’t help himself after practice yesterday when he said that Wednesday’s crowd at Madison Square Garden had the wrong take on the Knicks’ 113-102 loss to Washington.

“I can’t expect them to understand the game the way I understand it or see it the way we see it,” Thomas said. “It’s better that the punishment is given to myself than to the players. The players got to think and move free and perform. We had a good day today.”

AH: I JUST DON’T KNOW THE ANSWER

Alpha and the Week Ahead

Fueled by a benign CPI report and a continuation in the recent mind boggling level of corporate deal making, U.S. Equity Markets continued their bull run this past week as most of the major averages posted gains. Grabbing the headlines’ almost daily are the record breaking closing numbers of the Dow Jones Industrial Index which is up 8.8% year-to-date followed by the S&P 500 Index up 7.6% and the NASDAQ Composite Index up 5.9%.
I’ve posted the complete notes for our Honeymoon (complete with bonus spelling errors!), and I’ll be adding more pictures over the next week or so.

Could this be the year?

Losing the NL Division title may have been the kick in the pants the team needed. It’s been 15 years since the Braves began their NL Championship streak (not counting the 1994 strike when there was no championship, of course), and 12 years since their 1995 World Series win. It’s about time for another one, I think.

When I first started this blog, I mentioned being at a Braves game in 1992 when Otis Nixon made a fabulous catch that robbed the Pirates of a game-tying home run late in the game. After a little searching, I finally found footage of the catch on Youtube (the footage starts at the 1:35 mark in the video, or the 3:00 mark if the counter is counting down):

This should be really exciting. It’s not to often that you get such a powerhouse match up this early in the season, but today we do. Texas has looked extremely solid on all aspects of their game and to date Duke has not. The Blue Devils have basically played to the cailber of the team they were matched up against and it took a last second shot to win one of them. This game will totally live up to the hype and in the end Duke will prevail.

Ok, so for a while now, some people have mentioned that the menu sidebar overlaps the comments section of the page when you try posting a comment. As it turns out, this is a glitch that occurs only when you’re not logged in to the site, which explains why I never saw it.
It’s baseball season again, and only three games in, the Braves are showing promise. They swept the Phillies 3-0, which is a great way to start things off. It’s waaaay to early to make any predictions, but it feels good, anyway. Two of the three games were won with a extra-inning rallies, which was how the Braves won many games in their golden days in the early 90’s.

But more amazing are the less spotlighted gains of the Dow Jones Utilities (up 16.8% thus far in ’07), the Dow Jones Transports (up 14.3%), the S&P Mid Cap 400 (up 11.7%) and the Energy Index up (11.4%). We have focused on all of these sectors in our commentary over the past several months as recommended areas of alpha generation.

Despite the record highs in the major indexes, the technical condition of the market has deteriorated some this week. The advance/decline lines for both the NYSE and the NASDAQ lost some ground, a sign that the bullish momentum is losing strength. An abundance of liquidity continues to support this market along with a fair amount of skepticism on the sentiment front.
